Although Burgess was primarily a comic writer, his dystopian satire A Clockwork Orange remains his best-known novel. Burgess produced numerous other novels, including the Enderby quartet, and Earthly Powers. He wrote librettos and screenplays, including the TV mini-series Jesus of Nazareth. He worked as a literary critic for several publications, including The Observer and The Guardian , and wrote studies of classic writers, notably James Joyce. A versatile linguist, Burgess lectured in phonetics, and translated Cyrano de Bergerac , Oedipus Rex , and the opera Carmen , among others.

Earthly Powers is a panoramic saga novel of the 20th century by Anthony Burgess first published in It begins with the "outrageously provocative"  first sentence: "It was the afternoon of my eighty-first birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me. On one level it is a parody of a "blockbuster" novel, with the year-old hero, Kenneth Toomey allegedly loosely based on British author W. Somerset Maugham ,  telling the story of his life in 82 chapters. It "summed up the literary, social and moral history of the century with comic richness as well as encyclopedic knowingness", according to Malcolm Bradbury.
